Why Your Spotify Premium Renewal Failed (and How to Fix It Fast)

The top 8 reasons renewals fail, how to diagnose quickly, and the exact sequence to get back to Premium without losing your playlists or library.

Premium drops off. You open the app and the ads are back. A quick fix using your existing key should solve it, but sometimes the request fails. Before assuming something is broken, work through these eight causes. The fix for most is fast.

Mental model first: renew refreshes the key, Upgrade re-applies it

This trips people up, so lock it in before troubleshooting:

  • Renew refreshes the key itself. It does not directly renew a Spotify account.
  • Upgrade applies the refreshed key to a Spotify account. That account gains Premium.
  • You always run Renew first, then Upgrade. Two steps, same key.
  • Renew is free and unlimited under current policy. Current policy is subject to change, but keys purchased before any change are honored under today's terms.
Why this matters for troubleshooting: "my renewal failed" usually means one of two things - the key refresh itself failed, or the subsequent Upgrade (apply) failed. The causes below cover both.

1. Country out of stock

The top cause. If the region your key was issued for has no open slots right now, the renewal cannot complete. Fix: open Stocks, see which countries are available, and pick a different one during the renewal flow. You can change country at renewal without creating a new account.

2. Email mismatch

Renewal needs the exact Spotify login email. If you typed the wrong address or Spotify recently updated your email, the system cannot match your account. Fix: submit the email you actually log in with. Verify by signing in at spotify.com first.

3. Account already Premium

If your account still shows Premium (even on a different plan), renewal rejects with "already active." Fix: wait for current Premium to expire, or verify status in Key Info.

4. Account in bad state

Rarely, Spotify locks or restricts accounts for policy reasons. If your account cannot accept Premium, renewal fails silently. Fix: sign in at spotify.com and check for any banner or notification. Resolve any restrictions before retrying.

5. Invalid or expired key

Keys from very old purchases can sometimes de-sync from our backend records. Fix: use Key Info to check your key status. If it shows anything unusual, post in #support on Slack with the key reference and we will resolve.

Your key is reusable for life. Renewing the key itself is free and unlimited under current policy. You refresh the key, then Upgrade re-applies it to a Spotify account. The key is the asset you keep; Premium on a given account comes and goes with the slot.

6. Country change requires a different slot

Changing from one country to another during renewal means the system needs a slot in the new country. If that region is tight, the renewal may queue or fail. Fix: either pick a country with known stock, or wait for restock in your preferred region.

7. Cache and client

Even when renewal succeeded on our side, Spotify's client sometimes caches the old state. Fix: fully sign out of Spotify on every device, restart the app, sign back in. Premium badge should return.

8. Family plan cooldown after country or region change

If your original key was on a Family slot in country A and you now try to renew into country B, Spotify sometimes treats it as a new Family join and applies its cooldown. The rule: an account that was on a Family plan recently (Spotify says up to 12 months, the safe practical window is 6 months or more) can be blocked from joining another Family right away. Under 2 months is almost always a hard block.

Fix: check spotify.com/account/subscription for recent Family activity. If the cooldown applies, either renew back to the same country (so Spotify sees it as continuing the same plan) or wait until the cooldown clears. Post your timeline in #renew on Slack if you want a second opinion before retrying.

Cooldown is silent. Spotify does not tell you it applied. The renewal just does not stick. If you pushed a renewal twice in quick succession, stop and wait. Hammering retries increases the block risk.

The fix sequence (in order)

  1. Confirm login works at spotify.com.
  2. Check spotify.com/account/subscription for recent Family activity (under 6 months = likely cooldown).
  3. Check Stocks for country availability.
  4. Open Renew. Refresh your key. Free, unlimited under current policy.
  5. Open Upgrade. Paste the refreshed key, enter the Spotify account email + password, pick an available country (prefer the same region as your last key to dodge cooldown).
  6. Wait 10 minutes.
  7. Sign out of Spotify on all devices. Sign back in. Verify Premium.
  8. If still failing: post in #support on Slack with your key reference and the timestamp. Do not re-submit back-to-back.

What if it cannot be fixed

Our refund policy covers fully unsuccessful attempts. If we cannot complete your renewal after reasonable attempts and the service cannot be delivered, a full refund is issued. In practice, renewals almost always succeed once you pick an in-stock country.

Refresh your key and re-apply

Two steps: Renew refreshes the key, Upgrade re-applies it. Free under current policy. Back to Premium in minutes.
